Congratulations! You're having a baby and searching for your support system by looking into getting a doula. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey by taking the time to read my page "Becoming Your Doula."
What is a doula exactly?
If I have a midwife, why do I need a doula?....
These are good questions. Most women who choose to have a doula do so because they would like to have their babies as naturally as possible. Some choose to have a doula for support and encouragement for whatever may arise, most moms hire a doula to help support their desire for a total natural birth.
In ancient times all women had their babies at home or in a birthing tent. They were surrounded by wise women who had the knowledge to comfort, support and encourage these pregnant mommies to help bring their babies into the world. The wise women used massage, oils and herbs to help support the laboring mother and new born baby.
Today with modern medicine women are told they do not need to have their babies naturally. They are told that having their babies in a hospital with modern medicine is the safest way to go and yet the United States is one of the Countries with the highest rate of hospital births as well as one of the highest rate of infant deaths.
The epidurals they are offering young mothers numb the pain but they also leave the mother unable to push her baby out causing the Dr. to then have to perform a C-section or to use a vacuum or forceps (which can cause brain damage to the infant.) It's a vicious cycle and a way for the Dr., hospital, and pharmaceutical company to add money to their bank accounts.
A mother chooses natural birth for the safety of her baby and so that when the baby is born neither her nor her baby has been affected by modern drugs that can interfere with the bonding experience.
A Midwife and/or Doctor's role is to assist in bringing the baby into the world. Neither one usually shows up until the mother is fully dialated and ready to push. A doula's role is to be the mothers tribal sister, to help the mother from the beginning of labor until the birth of her baby. She is the one who spends all her time comforting, using pressure points, massaging and encouraging the mother all the way through her labor journey. She is the mother's lioness and watches over her to help bring the mother's birth vision into reality.
The day of your babies birth is one of the most memorable days of your life. The way your baby is brought into the world will help to shape your baby's world and the way he/she percieves it. You have choices... without a birth doula no matter what the birth plan is a mother's will power becomes vulnerable as well as her birth partner's. When this happens a medical Doctor will normally go back to his/her own belief system or protocol. With a doula standing by to support and guide you as well as your birth partner, the birth of your baby will become an honored space. One that is sacred and full of love.
You will want to choose a doula with whom you feel comfortable, one with whom you can speak openly, and one with whom you feel a sisterly connection. I would be honored to help you on your journey in any way that I can whether I am chosen as your doula or not. Feel free to email me at [email protected]
I wish you the very best and memorable birth possible <3
